The Merlin mk3 helicopter is a good way of moving marines and their kit from mountains back to base. Operating in these conditions is tough but has to be done.
Thanks to global warming ice is receding and opening up shipping lanes and so other nations are now spending more time claiming land as theirs so they can have a stake in minerals and gas that’s below the ice.
The main perceived threat is Russia. As one of the largest Arctic states, Russia has a lot to gain from the increased accessibility caused by climate change. In August 2017, for the first time, a Russian tanker travelled from Norway to South Korea across the Northern Sea without a separate icebreaker escort – a journey that took almost a third less time than the usual route via the Suez Canal.
There are concerns, however, that the Kremlin may have its sights set beyond its current borders. Under international law, the five countries surrounding the Arctic Ocean have a claim over waters up to 200 nautical miles from their coastline, with the North Pole and surrounding ocean considered international seas. But in 2007, in an underwater land grab, Russian mini-submarines planted a titanium Russian flag four kilometres below the ice on the Lomonosov ridge, signalling Moscow’s attempt to claim this oil- and gas-rich stretch of the seabed. Russia has also had historical disputes over the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.

It’s incredible the way the 40 Commando Royal Marines move across the snow. I spent half my time up to my waist in snow, cameras covered in water and ice. The marines have to lug their kit including General Purpose Machine Guns which aren’t light.
Taking position on a raised ground this marine provides cover for his squad.

It’s really great when everyone is given the freedom to produce what they want to do, it gives them the chance to create and feed on the goodness of allowing those ideas to grow and develop. Futurism with a nod to retro values. I first met Carlos Salaff through Instagram. I had admired his designs but more so his determination and passion for his work and the sense that nothing was going to stop him building this vision of his. I admire those qualities in people and he has that in abundance, along with a gentle sense of humanity and goodness. We worked together on getting this project off the ground, found a date and then he left it up to me to shoot what I wanted.

When you need to get into remote areas with a lot of kit then the Merlin Mk3 is probably what you’ll be needing. Built in anti icing on the rotor blades but no such luck inside. They purposefully keep the back cold so when the Marines load in then detach they don’t get hot and cold and sweat. The clothing would start to defrost then refreeze and that’s not what you want to be wearing when you’re embedded up a mountain in -30 degrees for the night. I’m a big fan of heavy lift and cargo machines and this one is very cool.

I went to the arctic circle with the Royal Marines for winter training. Amazing experience to see how they train and how incredibly difficult it is to fight and survive in extreme conditions. Clothing, temperatures, weaponry, hydration, staying dry all have an impact. Just trying to move through deep snow with your pack and weapon is exhausting and then you have to take into account someone is shooting at you and your cold and probably wet. They’re well trained and sometimes they get to move around in the back of these armoured vehicles. Vikings are tracked vehicles that make moving across the terrain easier, drier and safer and warmer. Armed with a GPMG they have a good piece of armament for close quarters.

Another example of London’s stunning brutalist architecture. The Barbican Centre is a performing arts centre with music, cinema and exhibitions being shown in its inspiring 80s architecture. Like a set from Logans Run, it’s a place to contemplate, enjoy and even live if you’re lucky enough. Opened in 1982 it was designed by Chamberlin Powell and Bon. This is something to blow your mind. This is MUSE, or part of it. It’s one of the devices connected to UT4 or Yepun, a telescope that I have previously shown. It can observe the entirety of an astronomical object in one go looking st the intensity of light as a function of its colour or wavelength. It then builds a 3D set where each pixel is made of full spectrum of light. This is how it does it. MUSE splits that field of view into 24 individual segments which are then split again into 48 slices or mini slits, giving a total of 1152 mini slits. Each of the 48 mini slits is objected into a spectrograph which dispersed the light into its constituent colours. MUSE measures 4000 of these colours and from this a 3D image is formed. Last year I had the pleasure of shooting the new V&A Museum in Dundee whist it was under construction. An absolutely incredible piece of architecture by the legendary Kengo Kuma. Each piece of the external structure is unique. The relationship between the water and the surfaces changes as the light changes. It’s a remarkable structure. I can’t wait to see it once it’s finished.

I recently went to Langley Virgina for @wireduk to shoot the Tri_lat military exercise. Three nations air forces, training together to hone their skills and tactics. Incredible aircraft, flown by incredible people. I got to meet the pilots, ground crews and officers and photograph the jets. F-35, F-22, Rafal and of course Typhoon.⠀

Following the robot’s appearance at the 2013 DRC Trials, the Valkyrie team modified and improved the robot – modifying the hands to increase reliability and durability, redesigning the ankle to improve performance and upgrading sensors for increase perception capability. The Valkyrie team also partnered with the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) to implement their walking algorithms on NASA hardware in preparation for the Space Robotics Challenge, part of NASA’s Game Changing Development Program and Centennial Challenges.⠀

The SEV is the size of a small pickup truck, it has 12 wheels, and can house two astronauts for up to two weeks. Consisting of a chassis and cabin module, it will allow the attachment of tools such as cranes, cable reels, backhoes and winches. Designed for 2, this vehicle is capable of supporting 4 in an emergency. With wheels that can pivot 360 degrees, the SEV is able to drive in any direction. Astronauts can enter and exit without space suits directly from an airlock docking hatch, or through a suitport without the need to depressurize the habitat module.⠀

One of the 5 huge Rocketdyne F1 motors, each put out out over 1.5 million lbs of thrust. Thats over 7.5 million lbs propelling the Saturn V upwards for the first 165 seconds before the stage 2 ignited, and gave the astronauts the jolt of a lifetime.⠀

Space Shuttle Discovery was launched on Aug. 30, 1984, for its first mission, 41-D, to deploy three communications satellites. ⠀

Discovery lifts off. Since that inaugural flight, Discovery has completed more than 30 successful missions, surpassing the number of flights made by any other orbiter in NASA’s fleet.NASA’s Discovery carried the Hubble Space Telescope into space during mission STS-31 in April 1990, and provided both the second and third Hubble servicing missions (STS-82 in February 1997 and STS-103 in December 1999). ⠀

Discovery has the distinction of being chosen as the Return to Flight orbiter twice. The first was for STS-26 in 1988, and the second when it carried the STS-114 crew on NASA’s Return to Flight mission to the International Space Station in July 2005.⠀

On Oct. 3, 1985, Atlantis launched on her first space flight, STS 51-J, with a classified payload for the U.S. Department of Defense. The vehicle went on to carry four more DOD payloads on later missions. ⠀

Flying a total of 207 crew members over 33 missions, spending 306 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes and 43 seconds in space. Orbting the earth 4,848 times, travelling 125, 935 769 miles she made her final flight STS 135 on 8-21 July 2011, bringing an end to the Space Shuttle era.⠀

The CST-100 Starliner (Crew Space Transportation) crew capsule is a spacecraft design under construction by Boeing in collaboration with Bigelow Aerospace as their entry for NASA’s Commercial Crew Development (CCDev) program. Its primary mission is to transport crew to the International Space Station[4] and to private space stations such as the proposed Bigelow Aerospace Commercial Space Station.[5]⠀

It is similar to the Orion, a spacecraft being built for NASA by Lockheed Martin.[6] The capsule has a diameter of 4.56 meters (15.0 ft),[1] which is slightly larger than the Apollo command module and smaller than the Orion capsule.[7] The Starliner is to support larger crews of up to seven people and is designed to be able to remain on-orbit for up to seven months with reusability of up to ten missions.[8] It is to be compatible with multiple launch vehicles, including the Atlas V, Delta IV, and Falcon 9, as well as the planned Vulcan.[9] The initial launch vehicle would be the Atlas V,[10] launched from SLC-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.⠀

Launched by a Saturn V rocket from Kennedy Space Center in Merritt Island, Florida, on July 16, Apollo 11 was the fifth manned mission of NASA’s Apollo program. The Apollo spacecraft had three parts: a command module (CM) with a cabin for the three astronauts, and the only part that landed back on Earth; a service module (SM), which supported the command module with propulsion, electrical power, oxygen, and water; and a lunar module (LM) that had two stages – a lower stage for landing on the Moon, and an upper stage to place the astronauts back into lunar orbit. After being sent toward the Moon by the Saturn V’s upper stage, the astronauts separated the spacecraft from it and traveled for three days until they entered into lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin then moved into the lunar module Eagle and landed in the Sea of Tranquility. They stayed a total of about 21.5 hours on the lunar surface. The astronauts used Eagle’s upper stage to lift off from the lunar surface and rejoin Collins in the command module. They jettisoned Eagle before they performed the maneuvers that blasted them out of lunar orbit on a trajectory back to Earth. They returned to Earth and landed in the Pacific Ocean on July 24.⠀

The rocket that will launch Orion into deep space is NASA’s new Space Launch System (SLS). Launching from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, the agency’s modernized spaceport,SLS will be the most powerful rocket ever built and will enable astronauts in the Orion spacecraft to travel deeper into the solar system. Exploration Mission-1 will be the first integrated flight of Orion atop the SLS. During the 2018 mission, an unscrewed Orion will travel more than 40,000 miles beyond the moon in the lunar proving ground and return to Earth, traversing about 1.5 million miles total⠀

The helmet has a Vent Pad, which directs oxygen from the Primary Life Support Subsystem and Hard Upper Torso to the front of the helmet. The helmet keeps the oxygen at the right pressure around the head. The main part of the helmet is the clear plastic bubble.⠀

The bubble is covered by the Extravehicular Visor Assembly, which is coated with a thin layer of gold that filters out the sun’s harmful rays. The visor also protects the astronaut from extreme temperatures and small objects that may hit the astronaut. These small micrometeoroids, can travel at up to 27,000 kilometers per hour⠀
A TV camera and lights can be attached to the helmet.⠀

The EMU, like the Apollo/Skylab A7L spacesuit, was the result of years of research and development. It consists of a Hard Upper Torso (HUT) assembly, a Primary Life Support System (PLSS) which incorporates the life support and electrical systems, arm sections, gloves, an Apollo-style “bubble” helmet, the Extravehicular Visor Assembly (EVVA), and a soft Lower Torso Assembly (LTA), incorporating the Body Seal Closure (BSC), waist bearing, brief, legs, and boots. Prior to donning the pressure garment, the crew member puts on a Maximum Absorbency Garment (MAG) (basically a modified incontinence diaper – Urine Collection Devices (UCDs) are no longer used), and possibly a Thermal Control Undergarment (long johns). The final item donned before putting on the pressure suit is the Liquid Cooling and Ventilation Garment (LCVG), which incorporates clear plastic tubing through which chilled liquid water flows for body temperature control, as well as ventilation tubes for waste gas removal.⠀

Continuing Robot Saturday, this is Robonaiut 1. The first generation Robonaut was designed by the Robot Systems Technology Branch at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre in a collaborative effort with DARPA. The Robonaut project seeks to develop and demonstrate a robotic system that can function as an EVA astronaut equivalent. Robonaut jumps generations ahead by eliminating the robotic scars (e.g., special robotic grapples and targets) and specialized robotic tools of traditional on-orbit robotics. However, it still keeps the human operator in the control loop through its telepresence control system. Robonaut is designed to be used for “EVA” tasks, i.e., those which were not specifically designed for robots.⠀

This is Robonaut R2. A Robonaut is a dexterous humanoid robot built and designed at NASA Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas. Their challenge is to build machines that can help humans work and explore in space. Working side by side with humans, or going where the risks are too great for people, Robonauts will expand our ability for construction and discovery. Central to that effort is a capability we call dexterous manipulation, embodied by an ability to use one’s hand to do work, and our challenge has been to build machines with dexterity that exceeds that of a suited astronaut.⠀

To end the day the we go back to the start with the first stage rockets. The 5 huge Rocketdyne F1 (isnt that one of the coolest names ever, Rocketdyne) motors each put out out over 1.5 million lbs of thrust. Thats over 7.5 million lbs propelling the Saturn V upwards for the first 165 seconds before the stage 2 ignited, and gave the astronauts the jolt of a lifetime.⠀

The first Saturn V launched with a crew was Apollo 8. On this mission, astronauts orbited the moon but did not land. On Apollo 9, the crew tested the Apollo moon lander by flying it in Earth orbit without landing. On Apollo 10, the Saturn V launched the lunar lander to the moon. The crew tested the lander in space but did not land it on the moon. In 1969, Apollo 11 was the first mission to land astronauts on the moon. Saturn V rockets also made it possible for astronauts to land on the moon on Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17. On Apollo 13, the Saturn V lifted the crew into space, but a problem prevented them from being able to land on the moon. ⠀

Lift off Friday!! The rocket motors from Space Shuttle Atlantis. the first time I stood next to Atlantis I had what can only be described as a religious epoxerience. I was in awe of it. Its not a feeling I have ever experienced before but I was truly in a state reverence.⠀

Weighing in at 151,315 pounds when it rolled out of the assembly plant in Palmdale, Calif., Atlantis was nearly 3.5 tons lighter than Columbia. The new orbiter arrived at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 9, 1985, and over the next seven months was prepared for her maiden voyage.⠀

On Oct. 3, 1985, Atlantis launched on her first space flight, STS 51-J, with a classified payload for the U.S. Department of Defense. The vehicle went on to carry four more DOD payloads on later missions. ⠀

Flying a total of 207 crew members over 33 missions, spending 306 days, 14 hours, 12 minutes and 43 seconds in space. Orbting the earth 4,848 times, travelling 125, 935 769 miles she made her final flight STS 135 on 8-21 July 2011, bringing an end to the Space Shuttle era.⠀

A Robonaut is a dexterous humanoid robot built and designed at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Their challenge is to build machines that can help humans work and explore in space. Working side by side with humans, or going where the risks are too great for people, Robonauts will expand our ability for construction and discovery. Central to that effort is a capability we call dexterous manipulation, embodied by an ability to use one’s hand to do work, and our challenge has been to build machines with dexterity that exceeds that of a suited astronaut.⠀

Pictured here is he EMU, like the Apollo/Skylab A7L spacesuit, was the result of years of research and development. It consists of a Hard Upper Torso (HUT) assembly, a Primary Life Support System (PLSS) which incorporates the life support and electrical systems, arm sections, gloves, an Apollo-style “bubble” helmet, the Extravehicular Visor Assembly (EVVA), and a soft Lower Torso Assembly (LTA), incorporating the Body Seal Closure (BSC), waist bearing, brief, legs, and boots. ⠀

The suit’s regulator and fans activate when the servicing umbilicals are removed and the suit reaches an internal pressure of 4.3 psi (30 kPa). A typical EMU can support an astronaut for 8.5 hours, including 30 minutes of reserves in the case of primary life support failure. ⠀

Pictured here is NASA’s R5 aka Valkyrie. It was designed and built by the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Engineering Directorate to compete in the 2013 DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) Trials. Valkyrie, a name taken from Norse mythology, is designed to be a robust, rugged, entirely electric humanoid robot capable of operating in degraded or damaged human-engineered environments. Building on prior experience from designing Robonaut 2, the JSC Valkyrie team designed and built this robot within a 15 month period, implementing improved electronics, actuators and sensing capability from earlier generations of JSC humanoid robots.⠀⠀
